10-Year-Old Steers Runaway Truck To Safety

( 4UMF NEWS ) 10-Year-Old Steers Runaway Truck To Safety:

A 10-year-old Alabama boy was lauded for his heroism after steering a truck to safety when the driver suffered a diabetic episode.

Christopher Wheeler, of Montgomery, was riding with neighbor Alfred Smith Thursday when the 70-year-old started losing consciousness. The truck weaved across the lanes on Interstate 65, running other vehicles off the road.

“He got sick and he was swerving across the road,” the boy told NBC affiliate WSFA. “He started getting sweaty and said he needed a piece of candy.”

Wheeler steered the truck — and applied the brakes to stop the pickup along Alabama Highway 14, ending the 10-mile run.

“I didn’t want us to die,” Christopher later told WSFA.

Smith was given a cookie, and later taken to the hospital.

Police credited the boy for his heroic efforts.

“The child’s actions may have saved the driver’s life, his own life and the lives of others on the road at the time,” the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency wrote, posting an image of Christopher on Facebook standing with Alabama Attorney General’s Office Special Agent Eric Salvador and Trooper Lee Walls.

The post received more than 60,000 likes by Monday afternoon.

Walls later took the boy for food at a local fast food restaurant as his family members arrived.

“Without the heroism of that child, I think they would have crashed off the road or into another vehicle. I think he saved a lot of lives out there,” Salvador told WSFA.
