11-Year-Old Dies Playing The Pass-Out Challenge

( 4UMF NEWS ) 11-Year-Old Dies Playing The Pass-Out Challenge:

An Upstate mother is warning parents to monitor their children’s social media after she says her 11-year-old son died playing a pass-out challenge game online.

Davorius Gray was found dead in his home last week.

His mother, Latrice Hurst, said her son was playing games called hangman and pass-out challenge where kids choke themselves to the point of passing out.

In a statement released through her pastor, Latrice said it is apparently a widely popular game.

“If I could rewind time, I would go back and heavily monitor his use of social media, YouTube and the Internet,” Latrice said. “I would just say, I don’t believe young people should be on social media and it should be limited to adults, or at the very least, with extreme adult supervision — where the parents can see everything that takes place on the sites — should be a requirement.”

Latrice said her son showed no signs of depression or destructive behavior, but was “a prankster and loved to play tricks.”

“This tragic loss of my son has opened up dialogue between students and teachers, students praying and our community coming together, understanding the only healing is through a relationship with Jesus Christ,” Latrice said.

Mark Pangel, the family’s pastor at 4 Points Church, said Davorius was “seriously one of the sweetest kids I’ve ever met. He was the one that would come up to you and hug you. He was always smiling.”

Pangel said he was in the hospital room with the family.

“It was the most humbling experience in my life because little Nae, his 8-year-old sister is in there, and she’s stoic and hurting and doesn’t know how to react. And I wanted to fix it and there’s literally nothing I could do,” Pangel said.

Davorius’ memorial service was held over the weekend at LifeSong Church in Lyman.

The Coroner’s Office and police are investigating Davorius’ death. They said the investigation is continuing.
