( 4UMF NEWS ) Steve Harvey Crowns Wrong Winner:
It was the biggest mistake in the universe.
This year’s Miss Universe winner had the shortest reign ever when a prime-time blunder forced officials to strip her of her crown and sash. The show hadn’t even gone to commercial.
Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, was in pageant heaven after host Steve Harvey announced her as the winner of Sunday night’s contest.
A beaming Gutierrez was smiling, waving and blowing kisses until it was announced that Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was the true winner. Gutierrez plummeted to Earth as Wurtzbach, looked globally confused.
Then Miss Universe 2014, Paulina Vega, did the unthinkable. She lifted the crown from Gutierrez’s perfect coif and set it upon the rightful raven tresses of Wurtzbach.
And the camera cut to commercial. Show over.
A mortified Harvey, the host of “Family Feud” and a standup comedian by trade, took the fall for wrongly reading the cue card that identified Miss Colombia as first runnerup, not winner.
Survey says . . . a big mistake.
“I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia,” Harvey tweeted, misspelling the names of the countries — perhaps because his hands were trembling as the Earth moved from under Gutierrez — before later correcting himself. “This was a terribly honest human mistake and I am so regretful.”
The winner-turned-runnerup was gracious in defeat.
“Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy,” Gutierrez said.
The real winner, meanwhile, took the moment in stride.
“It’s a very nontraditional crowning moment, isn’t it,” Wurtzbach said. “It’s very 2015.”
