( 4UMF NEWS ) Father Accidentally Kills Son Mistaking For An Intruder:
An elderly man who thought he was defending himself against an intruder soon realized his tragic mistake — that he shot his own son returning home from school.
The father of 14-year-old Georta Mack dropped his son off at a school bus stop Tuesday morning, but Cincinnati police say he the teen went back to his basement around 6:30 a.m.
The 73-year-old father, whose name hasn’t been made public made a painful 911 call and said that he had heard a noise downstairs before firing his .45 handgun when his son “jumped out” at him, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
The shooter told the operator to hurry, though Mack soon stopped breathing and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“Why didn’t you go to school?” he asks his dying son, who was hit in the neck.
The unidentified father had been raising the boy on his own, according to neighbors, who said that the pair were close.
Mack, who had recently been experiencing trouble at the satellite school he attended, was known for his constant smile, neighbors told WLWT.
Hamilton County is investigating whether to bring charges against the father.
Gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety says that more than 100 children ages 14 and under are killed in unintentional shootings each year, higher than federal estimates.
Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac said that gun ownership was an “individual choice” but that those with firearms need to be trained to use them properly.
