( 4UMF NEWS ) 4 People Killed After Ride Malfunctions:
Four people were killed while on a malfunctioning rapid rivers ride at Australia’s largest theme park Tuesday afternoon, local officials said.
Two men and two women — all unidentified as of early Tuesday — died after getting on the Thunder River Rapids ride at the Dreamworld theme park in Queensland around 2:20 p.m. local time, police officer Todd Reid said.
The river ride attraction races people on rafts down a fast-moving, man-made river. Two of the victims were catapulted out of their rafts, while the other two were trapped inside the ride. It was not immediately clear if the victims caught in the ride were trapped under water, or got stuck in machinery.
Park staffers tried providing first aid to the victims, who were all in their 30s and early 40s, but their injuries proved fatal and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Dreamworld CEO Craig Davidson said there had been no previous malfunctions with the ride.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this, and our hearts and our thoughts go out to the families involved and to their loves ones,” Davidson said.
The park remained closed following the accident. It was not immediately clear what triggered the malfunction.
Local politicians and residents took to social media as word of the accident spread.
“Heartbreaking news from Dreamworld. Sending our love to the families of those who lost their lives in this devastating tragedy,” Labor Party MP Bill Shorten tweeted.
“Oh my god…4 people died today on the ride I was on two months ago at dreamworld. Shocking news, thoughts are with the families,” a local resident tweeted.
