5-Year-Old Shot In Head

( 4UMF NEWS ) 5-Year-Old Shot In Head:

An innocent boy celebrating his birthday with his dad in the Bronx was in critical condition late Monday after getting shot in the head — the victim of a stray bullet. He’s only 5.

The boy, who sources identified as Jaheen Hunter, was with his father as they left the dad’s Morrisania apartment on Washington Ave. near E. 167th St. at about 5 p.m., police said.

The duo was headed to the father’s car to drive the boy back home to his mom, according to police sources.

But they got caught between two feuding men on the sidewalk. One of the men approached the other on the sidewalk and started shooting, police said.

“There were four shots, boom, boom, boom, boom,” said Victor Hernandez, 59, who works in the deli across the street. “The little boy was shot in the head, he was lying in the street. Poor little kid, it’s so very sad.”

Video captured the chaotic scene and the aftermath as the suspected shooter ran south on Washington Ave., cops said.

In the surveillance video taken from various buildings, the frightened boy is seen trying to back away from the two men just before the shooting began, according to police sources.

A woman from the neighborhood said she heard the two shouting as the shots rang out.

“One was screaming, ‘You’re a dead f------ man, a dead f------ man!’ ” the woman recalled hearing. “The poor little boy, he was on the sidewalk,” she added.

The stunned father, realizing his son had been shot, bundled him into the car and rushed him to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital. Jaheen was later transferred to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia. Anxious relatives arriving at the pediatric emergency room were whisked into a private area to talk with cops. Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen, who was at the scene of the shooting, said detectives were chasing leads on the suspects.

“We’re trying to ID the suspects through video. One person was shooting at another individual on the sidewalk behind us,” Nikunen said while standing on Washington Ave.

Neighbors and police sources identified the father as Charlie Hunter, 62. An upstairs neighbor described Jaheen as a loving son and Hunter as a doting dad.

“He’s always with his daddy, riding around on this father’s electric scooter,” said the resident. “We call him ‘Little Man.’ ”

A snippet of video reviewed by the Daily News showed a man sprinting away from the scene with a cast on his right arm and what appeared to be a gun shoved into the left pocket of his windbreaker.

Cops recovered several bullet casings at the scene.

A person of interest in the case was being questioned by cops Monday night, but no arrests had been made, police said.
