( 4UMF NEWS ) 80-Year-Old Woman Kills Home Intruder:
Granny’s got a gun.
Barb Moles, an 80-year-old with eight grandchildren and three great-grandkids, shot and killed a home intruder who stabbed her husband last week in Washington.
“You know how mothers are with their kids. That’s the way I am with my husband,” she told KOMO. “I just protect his back. I’m not just the typical granny — in case you haven’t noticed.”
The woman, whose adult son was also home at the time, heard an altercation in her house and walked into the kitchen to discover her husband John lying in a pool of blood.
After he told her he’d been stabbed and hit with a crowbar by a man who authorities would later identify as Steven N. Sheppard, Barb ran to her bedroom to retrieve an item John gave her for Christmas a few years ago — a .38 caliber.
She waited, gun in hand, behind her bedroom door, but after there were no signs of the intruder, Barb walked into the hallway where the confrontation occurred.
The burglar said “gun” moments before Barb pulled the trigger four times, with three of the shots hitting the man.
“I felt like if I hadn’t, my son and I might both be dead and my husband might have bled to death on the kitchen floor,” she said.
“You know, never in my whole life did I ever anticipate having to take another life — especially at age 80.”
Sheppard, 25, was dead by the time authorities arrived at the home. Police believe he may have been looking for prescription drugs to steal. The incident is still being investigated.
“I just did what I had to do and I’m so sorry for [the intruder’s] family,” Barb said. “I just feel badly for his family.”
John, a former Boeing employee who is now retired, was transported to Harborview Medical Center and has been there all week.
One of the couple’s grandchildren, Morgan Dobson, has created a GoFundMe page to help pay for John’s medical bills, as well as repair costs for their “blood-soaked carpet.”
