( 4UMF NEWS ) Balcony Collapse Kills 5:
A fourth-floor apartment building balcony collapsed onto the sidewalk just blocks from the University of California, Berkeley campus early Tuesday, killing five people and leaving eight others injured, some critically, police say.
Many of the injured have critical, life-threatening wounds, police spokeswoman Jennifer Coats said.
The Irish Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement posted to Twitter that a number of young Irish citizens were among the dead and injured.
“My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the deceased and those who have been injured in this appalling accident,” the statement from Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Charlie Flanagan read. “My department in Dublin stands ready to provide all possible consular assistance to Irish citizens affected by this tragedy.”
Police received a call about the incident around 12:41 a.m. Tuesday, and when officers arrived they found that the balcony on the fourth floor of the building at 2020 Kittredge Street had disintegrated. The building is just two blocks from the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.
Coats said officers are still investigating and she doesn’t have any information on how it occurred or what the people were doing on the structure at the time.
“We don’t know what happened. Officers on scene talking with people,” witnesses, she said.
Coats said she also didn’t have information on the identities of the victims, including their ages and gender.
The building has apartment in the upper floors and retails shops on the ground floor. The building has not been evacuated, Coats said.
