( 4UMF NEWS ) Bloody Trayvon Martin Added To Nativity:

A church Nativity scene swapped Jesus for Trayvon Martin — and skipped straight to the crucifixion.

The display outside the Claremont United Methodist Church in Los Angeles County features a mannequin in a black hooded sweatshirt with blood streaming from his chest into a red puddle that reads, "A Child is Born, a Son is Given," reported the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

"Easter and Christmas should be tied together. It's all the same story," artist John Zachary said to the California newspaper.

But some wonder why Zachary is tying the life and death and Jesus Christ to the 17-year-old African-American who was shot dead by former neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in February 2012.

Is he implying that Martin died for our sins?

Well, as the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin explains, Zachary has been creating controversial Nativity scene displays outside his church for the past seven years to modernize Biblical themes. He has portrayed Joseph and Mary as a homeless couple in a ghetto neighborhood, as Iraq War refugees and as Mexican immigrants.

And after Zimmerman's acquittal in July, Zachary thought it was high time to chime in on that media firestorm. Now the manger shows the silhouettes of Mary and Joseph looking down on the dead teenager.

"I thought this would be more controversial, but I come to find out people don't really like people gettin' shot," Zachary told the California newspaper. "They may not agree what to do about it, but they agree it's a bad thing."

Zachary has been attending the church for 15 years. When church leaders asked him to build a Nativity scene in 2007, he decided to focus on people who don't have the "privilege" to enjoy typical Christmas traditions, he said.

"Maybe I should do something that's provocative, that's more in keeping with the teachings of Jesus," he said.

Whether Zachary's installation is more in line with the teachings of Jesus is up to the viewer — the artist certainly knew ahead of time that not everyone would appreciate the display.

The Nativity Scene went up Dec. 8 and will be taken down Jan. 5.
