( 4UMF NEWS ) David West Chooses The Spurs:
David West has reportedly decided to join the San Antonio Spurs, according to David Aldridge of NBA.com, adding to an impressive free agency for the franchise.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported West signed a deal worth $1.4 million.
On July 2, Stein reported West was likely to land with the Spurs, noting the Wizards were also a possibility. Stein also noted the Cavaliers had entered the race.
On July 1, West appeared to have crossed the Knicks off his list of destinations, according to Bob Kravitz of WTHR.com: “West said the rumors about him going to the Knicks are ridiculous; he wants to be with a contender; the Knicks don’t qualify.”
West also discussed why he won’t be returning to the Pacers, per Kravitz:
I’m just not sure the Pacers are in title contention right now. I’m going into my 13th season. I’ll be 35 soon. When I got to Indiana, there was hope of getting there and we played at a really high level for a couple of years. But I just don’t know if the team is in the position to win right now and I didn’t know if I’d have that opportunity to win a title if I’d stayed with the Pacers.
He appeared in 66 contests for the Indiana Pacers this season, but after a disappointing year, he told the team he would be declining his $12.6 million player option for the 2015-16 season, instead hitting free agency.
While West averaged his fewest points per game since his second season in the league, he remains a solid player at power forward and brings grit and experience to the position. For a team that added LaMarcus Aldridge to an already-potent core of talent, West’s signing is another statement of intent in the Western Conference.
