Longtime character actor Irwin Keyes has passed away. According to Variety, the veteran star died on Wednesday, July 8, at the age of 63.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Keyes died in his Playa Del Rey, Calif. home after a battle with acromegaly. He reportedly spent recent months in a treatment center to fight the pituitary gland disorder.
The late Keyes spent decades in the entertainment industry, earning his earliest credits in the 1970s with roles in The Warriors, Squeeze Play, and The Prize Fighter. He went on to make guest appearances on The Jeffersons as the entertaining bodyguard Hugo Mojelewski, and continued his small-screen turn with cameos on Married With Children, Growing Pains, and Get Smart.
The New York City native saw success on the big screen as well, starring twice as Joe Rockhead in 1994’s The Flintstones and 2000’s The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, also nabbing roles in House of 1000 Corpses and Intolerable Cruelty with Catherine Zeta-Jones and George Clooney.
Despite his health troubles, Keyes continued to act in recent years. He earned a credit for Pretty Little Liars in 2013 and completed filming on a new horror film called Portend.
Keyes is survived by his wife Tracy Fontaine, and was remembered by his relative Rene Galarza as a “beloved uncle, brother, teammate and friend” in a Facebook post that has since been made private.
