( 4UMF NEWS ) Jameis Winston Plans To Visit The Jets:
Jameis Winston isn’t expected to be available when the Jets are on the clock with the No. 6 pick, but he will be making a pre-draft visit to Gang Green headquarters, according to sources.
The Daily News has learned that the Jets cancelled a private workout with the former Florida State quarterback after his marathon Pro Day on March 31 that included 102 passes and assorted props (i.e – brooms).
The Jets were scheduled to hold on-field and classroom sessions with Winston in Tallahassee on April 4 — similar to the private workout held for Marcus Mariota in Oregon a couple weeks ago — but informed him that it wouldn’t be necessary after his thorough Pro Day.
General manager Mike Maccagnan, head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey were in attendance for Winston’s solid performance that included an hour-long throwing session.
Winston has been told by Jets officials that he’ll have some classroom/film work to test his football acumen during his visit to Florham Park. The Jets will also undoubtedly use the time to get a better sense of a player with a questionable past that includes sexual assault and shoplifting accusations.
“He’s ready to be an NFL player on the field. But he’s not ready to be an NFL player off the field,” attorney David Cornwell, who represented the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner after his sexual assault accusation, said Friday. “We have to assist him in growing and developing as a man.”
Cornwell later clarified his remarks by claiming that Winston “is more ready than most” after a recent meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and his pre-draft preparation. Maccagnan has made it clear that he’ll explore all options, including trading up, in the upcoming draft.
The consensus in league circles is that the Buccaneers will take Winston with the No. 1 pick, but could the Jets make an aggressive move up the draft board to land him?
Nothing is impossible.
