Jon "Bones" Jones has been stripped of the light heavyweight title and suspended indefinitely by Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Jones, who failed a drug test in January and reportedly spent a day in rehab, turned himself into authorities in New Mexico on Monday in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left a pregnant women with a broken arm. He appeared in court on Tuesday and is facing a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injuries.

UFC released the following statement:

UFC feels strongly that its athletes must uphold certain standards both in and out of the Octagon. While there is disappointment in the recent charges, the organization remains supportive of Jones as he works through the legal process.
Jones was scheduled to defend his title May 23 at UFC 187 against Anthony Johnson. Instead, UFC president Dana White and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta announced that Johnson will face Daniel Cormier for the 205-pound light heavyweight belt.

"Obviously, he's very disappointed," White said, via Ariel Helwani. "He wanted to go down as one of the greats but it was the decision we had to make. It's not fun, but you know what they say, the show goes on. ... Daniel Cormier was beyond pumped to get this opportunity.

"Cormier, as soon as he heard it, said, 'Put me in.' He was blowing me and Lorenzo up [on the phone] as soon as he heard about this."

Jones, 27, is 21-1 with nine knockouts in his professional mixed martial arts career.

"I don't know what's going to happen," White said regarding Jones' future with the company. "He has been suspended indefinitely. We'll see what happens."
