( 4UMF NEWS ) Man Holding Newborn Kills Girlfriend:

A 21-year-old father has been charged with shooting to death his girlfriend as he held the couple’s 3-month-old daughter, police said.

Dimitri Harrell was arraigned Monday for the Easter Sunday attack that killed Samirria White, 19, at their St. Paul, Minn., apartment.

Harrell told police he accidentally fired the gun while the couple was arguing. The weapon had been stored under the baby’s crib mattress, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

White was shot in the head at close range, the coroner’s office said.

There were several people inside the apartment when Harrell and White began arguing in the wee hours Sunday after the man came home, authorities said.

White’s 16-year-old brother said he heard the two yelling in their bedroom, and he listened as his sister shouted “Don’t point that gun at me!” according to police. Then the teenager heard a gunshot. He ran into the room and told Harrell to get away from his sister, he said. The father said he had not meant to fire the gun, which he had bought a few days before and was storing under the baby’s mattress.

Harrell has two children by another woman, he told police, and that created “trust issues” with White. Their baby, Damirria, was not injured.

Police arrived at the apartment about 3:40 a.m. Harrell, who had fled, later surrendered to investigators, the paper said.

In 2014, the mother of his other children filed for a protective order after complaining Harrell had shoved her onto a car while she was pregnant.
