( 4UMF NEWS ) Man Robs Bank To Keep Playing Blackjack:
Nothing was going to stop a West Virginia man from finishing a game of blackjack on Tuesday — not even a lack of funds.
When Kerry Johnson, 52, ran out of money at a Mardi Gras Casino blackjack table, he left the table to go to the bank — and robbed it — before returning to the table, WCHS reported.
Police arrested Johnson the following day.
Johnson robbed City National Bank on Bridge Road at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Kanawha County Magistrate Court criminal complaint.
He walked into the bank and handed a teller a note that said he had a bomb and a weapon and demanded that they give him money, the complaint said. After money was handed over, he fled the scene in a green Mazda Miata.
Detectives inspected Johnson’s home and found a yellow legal pad matching the kind of paper the threatening note had been written on, the complaint said.
Detectives also recovered money under a couch cushion that was out of place, according to the complaint. The exact sum was not released.
Police said Johnson claimed to have been at the casino from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but that detectives later discovered he had left the casino for a period of time that matched the time of the robbery.
He allegedly returned to the table and continued gambling, stolen cash in hand.
The casino’s vice president, Daniel Adkins, said he was “a little bit in the dark” on the series of events.
Johnson has been charged with bank robbery and is being held in the South Central Regional Jail on $50,000 bond.
