Man Uses 4-Year-Old Son As Human Shield In Shoplifting Attempt

( 4UMF NEWS ) Man Uses 4-Year-Old Son As Human Shield In Shoplifting Attempt:

An Arizona man used his 4-year-old son as a human shield after a disastrous robbery attempt went wrong.

Lorenzo Perez, 28, grabbed the boy when security guards caught him with $67 worth of goods stuffed down his pants at a JCPenney in Glendale on Wednesday afternoon.

When confronted by cops, the Phoenix man pulled a gun from his waistband and punched one of the officers in the face, Arizona Central reported, citing court documents.

Perez then tossed the .40-caliber Glock over a railing in the Arrowhead Town Center mall, where it narrowly missed a line of children waiting to meet Santa Claus, according to police. Nobody was injured by the firearm and a worker at the “photo with Santa” display removed the bullets.

Perez then picked up the boy and used him as a shield as a police officer confronted him with his sidearm, Fox 10 Phoenix reports.

“At one point in time, Lorenzo held the child over the mall railing, which has an estimated 21-foot-drop to the first floor,” according to court documents.

Perez was held Thursday in a Maricopa County jail and faces a range of charges including armed robbery, aggravated assault, endangerment, child abuse and disorderly conduct.
