Mom Arrested And Accused Of Baking While Drunk

( 4UMF NEWS ) Mom Arrested And Accused Of Baking While Drunk:

An Indiana mom was arrested after she allegedly fell asleep while baking cookies with her four children in the apartment, authorities said.

Caitlin Marie Patterson, 28, of Muncie, Ind., is accused of being intoxicated, and police said they found marijuana on her bed when they responded to the incident. Smoke from the burning cookies activated an alarm about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, and a neighbor called 911.

When firefighters arrived at the apartment they reportedly had to awaken the woman, who was asleep in her bed. Her four children, who had been sleeping in the living room, were not injured and were led to a neighbor's apartment.

A witness told police that Patterson's apartment was very smoky and smelled bad, but she didn't see any flames. Patterson also had been taken to a neighbor's apartment when police arrived.

In charging documents, an officer wrote that Patterson staggered as she approached him and "swayed as she stood." A breath test measured her blood-alcohol content at 0.115%; she was not initially charged with public intoxication.

Indiana Child Protective Services officials were called to the scene. The four children eventually were placed in the care of their grandmother, according to a police report.

Patterson, preliminarily charged with four counts of neglect of a dependent and possession of marijuana, was arrested Wednesday but was not listed Thursday in online Delaware County Jail records.
