( 4UMF NEWS ) Mom Charged With Neglect After 2-Year-Old Fatally Shoots Self:
An Indianapolis woman is accused of neglecting her 2-year-old son, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound last month.
Kanisha Shelton, 23, was charged Tuesday with a felony count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, Marion Superior Court records show. Her 2-year-old son, Kiyan, died April 20 after accidentally shooting himself in the chest with a gun he found in his mother’s purse.
Shelton told police she left her purse on the counter near the kitchen when she and her two children arrived home, court records state. The purse contained Shelton’s wallet, cellphone and gun.
Her 9-month-old daughter was crying, so Shelton said she took the baby upstairs to get her ready for bed.
Shelton said she heard her cellphone ring downstairs, then a “boom.” She went back downstairs and found her son on the floor. Shelton called 911 and tried to give Kiyan CPR, according to court records.
Shelton has been arrested and released on bond, according to the Marion County prosecutor’s office and jail records. She had an initial court hearing scheduled for Thursday.
There have been more than a dozen accidental shootings of children in central Indiana since 2008, and criminal charges in such cases are not unprecedented, The Indianapolis Star found.
Nicholas Gulling and Sandra Tomich were charged in 2014 after their 3-year-old son pulled a gun off the kitchen counter and shot himself in the head.
Gulling pleaded guilty March 22 to felony neglect of a dependent, Marion Superior Court records show. The Indianapolis man, who faces up to 10 years in prison, is scheduled to be sentenced June 3. Tomich’s case is pending.
Peg McLeish, spokeswoman for the Marion County prosecutor’s office, said the May 1 death of a 10-year-old boy is still under investigation. Initial reports indicated the boy fatally shot himself by accident.
