Puerto Rico Braces For Tropical Storm Erika

( 4UMF NEWS ) Puerto Rico Braces For Tropical Storm Erika:

Tropical Storm Erika lashed Puerto Rico early Friday with heavy rains and wind after killing four people and causing devastating floods in the eastern Caribbean island of Dominica, where several people remained missing.

New tropical storm warnings have also been issued for parts of the Bahamas as Tropical Storm Erika approaches.

The deadly storm had maximum sustained winds early Friday near 50 mph (85 kph).

The storm is centered about 155 miles (250 kilometers) east-southeast of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and is moving west-northwest near 17 mph (28 kph).

At least four people were killed and 20 were missing as Tropical Storm Erika battered the Caribbean island of Dominica on Thursday, bringing heavy rain, calamitous flooding and landslides to the tiny nation.

Photos and videos on social media showed floodwaters inundating streets and causing buildings to collapse on the eastern Caribbean island. Up to 15 inches of rain fell there between late Wednesday and early Thursday, the Antigua Weather Service said.

The storm could eventually impact the USA's East Coast by early next week, potentially as a hurricane.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Jimena has strengthened to a hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph (130 kph). The hurricane doesn’t currently pose a threat to any land.
