Store Owner Fights Off Knife-Wielding Robber

( 4UMF NEWS ) Store Owner Fights Off Knife-Wielding Robber:

A convenience store owner fought off a knife-wielding robber using a kitchen knife he hid under the counter, dramatic video revealed Tuesday.

Jose Tirado-Sanchez, 36, leaped onto the counter and ordered the owner of Jarek's Market to give him money Sunday morning around 10 a.m., ABC News reported. Cops caught Tirado-Sanchez the next day, police in Fall River, Mass., said.

The suspect is shown in footage obtained by WCVB-TV touching the money, then getting a surprise when the clerk pulled the cash back and reached for his own butcher knife. Neither Tirado-Sanchez nor the owner suffered any serious injuries even though they were waving the knives at each other for over a minute at the 5th St. shop, police said.

The masked robber can be seen dropping his knife at one point but picking up the owner’s knife after a struggle in which the burglar threw down display shelves and hit the owner with a can of corn. The store owner then threw the money at him, and the robber fled.

“I was so scared I didn’t know what I was doing,” the owner, who asked that his name not be shared, told WCVB. “I think he wanted to kill me. I wanted to defend myself, that’s why I did it. He made me scared.”

The store owner is shown pretending to fork over the cash in the video. He then whipped out a butcher knife hidden under the counter.

A police officer in the town just east of Providence, R.I., noticed a man who fit the suspect’s description while at the scene of an unrelated incident Monday, officials at the police department told ABC. The officer cuffed Tirado-Sanchez after talking with him about the convenience store robbery.

He’s now locked up on charges of armed robbery while masked, armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and vandalism of property.
