( 4UMF NEWS ) Two Men Arrested For Throwing Eggs, Shouting Racial Slurs At Black Woman:
Two St. Louis-area men face hate crime charges after hurling eggs and racial slurs at a black woman sitting at a bus stop Friday night, police said.
Jesse Reed and David Ragain, who are white, drove up to the south St. Louis bus stop around 11 p.m. and “began yelling offensive, hateful language motivated by race towards her,” said Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson, according to KTVI-TV.
Investigators said the two men called her a “n—-r b—h.” Reed and Ragain, who are both 30 and live in nearby Jefferson County, tossed eggs out of the white minivan and hit the woman with one of them before driving away, Dotson said at a news conference.
“These aren’t young teens out for a joyride and up to mischief,” Dotson said. “These were two individuals in their 30s who were there for what I describe as a hate crime, a bias crime. That’s what they were charged with, third-degree assault motivated by discrimination, motivated by race.”
Investigators tracked the van using a surveillance camera and license plate reader at the S. Grand Blvd. bus stop and arrested them later in the night, according to a police report cited by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Other African-American people waiting for buses along the same route Friday night said they were also hit with eggs moments after the woman reported the crime, investigators said.
Dotson asked anyone with information on Friday night or other past racially-motivated incidents the two men may have been involved in to contact the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
Assault motivated by discrimination is a third-degree felony, and Reed and Ragain were incarcerated on $20,000 bonds.
