( 4UMF NEWS ) Two Women Killed In Shooting At Courthouse:
Two women are dead and a suspect is in custody following a shooting outside Navajo County Superior Court in Holbrook, according to a county official.
Both the suspect and the victims had been at court for a hearing. Gunfire erupted outside the building as the women were leaving Tuesday evening, said Navajo County spokesman Adam Wolfe.
“We don’t know his motive yet; we aren’t in his mind,” Wolfe said. “We do know the suspect was involved in the hearing, and for whatever reason, it led to him opening fire.”
Authorities did not release the identities of those involved Tuesday night.
Wolfe said no employees of the court were involved and authorities believe the suspect and victims knew each other. The attack, Wolfe said, was “personal, and not an attempt at a mass shooting.”
Sheriff’s deputies and other officers responded to the scene, officials said. The Navajo County Homicide Task Force is investigating.
“It will be a joint effort to get to the bottom of this, and make sure all the facts come out,” Wolfe said.
The county’s social-media accounts Tuesday evening said the Sheriff’s Office was “no longer seeking the shooter” but provided few details.
The rural communities of Navajo County have been affected by the Cedar Fire that burned about 45,000 acres, raging for more than a week just south of Show Low. Wolfe said the community came together for support during the wildfire, and will do so in the wake of Tuesday’s shooting.
“This is not common for this area at all,” he said. “The area is family-oriented and very wholesome. When it first happened, we were all concerned for people’s safety. Now we want to find out why. Anything like this will shake a community, but we will heal. That’s what this community does.”
