Dancehall is currently mourning the death of one of its pioneers, Wayne Smith, popular known for the single “Under Me Sleng Teng.”

According to reports, Wayne Smith died yesterday at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) after battling a stomach related illness.

The veteran deejay was admitted at the KPH last Friday after complaining about stomach pain, his condition improved over the weekend but deteriorated on Monday. He soon later succumb to his illness.

An autopsy will be done on his body to determine the cause of his death.

Wayne Smith helped revolutionized reggae/dancehall in the late 1980s when he released the now classic single “Under Me Sleng Teng,” produced by Lloyd ‘King Jammys’ James in 1984.

Wayne Smith would go on to release other hits such as “Come Along” and “Ain’t no Meaning in Saying Goodbye.”

Wayne Smith was age 48 at the time of his death.
